There is no doubt that COVID-19 has impacted nearly every aspect of our lives. From work, to shopping, to the simple pleasures we enjoy like getting together and gaming with our friends. Quarantine and social distancing have made it not only difficult, but irresponsible to gather in groups to enjoy our favorite hobbies.
Worry not, though! Just because we can’t all sit at the same table doesn’t mean that we’re doomed to boredom and isolation. Luckily, there are more options than ever before to play our favorite games online. Let’s take a look at some of them and how they work.
Playing Dungeons & Dragons Online
We are currently living in what can only be described as a renaissance for tabletop gaming. With the popularity of 5th Edition, Critical Role, and other digital streams, the availability and visibility of online platforms like Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds have skyrocketed.
Roll20 definitely has a steep learning curve, with hours of tutorials and thousands of marketplace offerings. It can be intimidating for a first-timer user, but that’s due to the sheer versatility of the platform and its many powerful tools. As pictured above, with the right assets, your imagination is the limit to what kind of campaign you can build. And best of all? It’s free!
Fantasy Grounds is another popular virtual tabletop with a plethora of features. However, the startup cost is significantly more expensive. The dungeon master has to purchase a license and any other official content for use with the platform, which can then be shared with any players who join their game.
Most importantly, these platforms aren’t just for Dungeons & Dragons. They work with a variety of other game systems, such as Pathfinder, Call Of Cthulhu, Starfinder, and other.
Magic: The Gathering players don’t have to forego their gaming time, either. MTG Arena is the official free-to-play computer version of the wildly popular trading card game. Simply download, register, and get matched to other players from around the globe.
And during this time of social isolation, Wizards of the Coast have even made it possible to continue participating in Magic:The Gathering events without putting yourself or anyone else at risk. Starting tonight and running through the next few weeks, WotC is hosting Friday Night Magic through MTG Arena so that people can still play and earn rewards. Participate, screenshot your event page, and send us the picture for a code for free in-game sleeves.
ChannelFireball is also hosting Magic Fest, a daily tournament with prizes and the chance to get invited to more prestigious events. This not only gives players the opportunity to game, it also supports local game stores who have been affected by the pandemic by donating a portion of the proceeds directly to stores using a referral code. If you’d like to participate and support us at the same time, our store code is: PAIR A DICE GAMES.
Stay Safe – Have Fun
Times are tough, but we’re all in this together. It takes a community to protect a community. We hope that some of these resources help you stave off the boredom and keep you sane during isolation. Stay safe and we’ll see you all on the other side of this thing.
Pair A Dice Games is San Diego’s favorite game store. For the safety of our employees and customers, our storefront is currently closed to the public. However, we are still taking orders from customers for curbside pickup. Give us a call to stock up on puzzles and games for while you’re stuck at home.
