Life in Reterra

I often find myself being the "board game ambassador" for my friend group. This is not surprising, as I work in a board game store. But what might be surprising is the games I get to the table most often—games that are easier to teach, quicker to set up, can have a stronger hold on someone's attention span, and have enough depth to enjoy playing.

Life in Reterra is just that game.

Set in a future world after the collapse of civilization, players choose a land tile from their hand or the display and then add it to their community, which can be at most four tiles on each side. When the tile has a gear, you can either place an inhabitant from the reserve on this gear or place a building tile in your community, but a gear must support each part of the building, and all of these gears must be on the same type of terrain. Each building has different powers dictated by its matching double-sided card.

With 20 cards, many card combinations and game setups allow no two games to be identical. The game has some of the quickest setups, with cards and building tiles easily sorted into plastic trays that come with the game! All of this together is to say, I love this game. I can teach it to anyone, vary up the gameplay to keep it fresh, and the game has very little clashing between players.
